[LEARN WITH IGVN] How does color in games affect the player experience? ___________________________ 1/ How players perceive color Before players even understand the storyline or gameplay, a game’s color palette already paints a general picture of what the devs want to convey. A world drenched in gray, brown, and black tones creates a gloomy, heavy atmosphere, telling players right away that it’s a horror game. On the other hand, you can feel safe letting kids play a game with a bright color palette, as it brings the cozy, soothing vibe typically found in cozy or children's games. This is why just by looking at an in-game screenshot, players can often guess the genre without reading any description.

2/ Guiding players without the wordiness As you often see, the appearance of red in games is usually associated with danger or urgency, blue evokes a sense of peace or coldness, while yellow is used to grab attention or warn players. This is why health bars are often red, and important items are typically highlighted in yellow or orange. It’s a pretty clever way to "mark" signals for players without needing to use words.

Additionally, you can use color to highlight exactly what you want the player to do in the game. A door with a glowing border in the middle of a dark room is instantly understood as an important interaction point. A path that is lit up brighter than the rest of the map is usually a hint for where to go next.

3/ A few basic color principles If you want players to notice something, make its color stand out from the surrounding environment.

Color also requires consistency. Therefore, you should predefine a color palette for different functions in the game, with each color tied to a fixed type of information. ___________________________ And if you are developing an indie game and want to get it into the hands of playtesters, don't forget that Hobby Horizon: Singularity is taking place from July 17–19, 2026, at Sky Expo, Ho Chi Minh City. Plus, the Indie Games Showcase area by IGVN is still open for booth registrations!!
