Hoa Giấy ("Paper Flower", the Vietnamese name for bougainvillea) is a simple, relaxing game about a bougainvillea, a small street and its neighbours in late-1990s Hanoi.

Your grandmother has left you house number 36 on Hàng Tem street, built in 1929, with a bougainvillea grown all over its front. Tết, the Lunar New Year, is coming. You look after the tree, help the neighbours with a few small jobs, paste photos into grandma's notebook, and see the New Year in on the old street.

Trial: the Spring chapter (three days of Tết: the 28th, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, about 5–10 minutes)

  • Look after and shape the bougainvillea: water the roots, shake the branches and pick up the fallen petals. Prune, bend branches, nail them to the wall and let new shoots grow, like a bonsai, or choose one of 38 ready-made shapes. Your tree keeps its shape, and three shapes can be saved to switch between.
  • The neighbours, each with a story: chị Hằng sells iced tea out front, cô Mai sells flowers from her bicycle, ông Khải keeps the stamp shop. Each favour turns up a memory of grandma and leaves one of your own on the street. Whoever has something to say stands in a soft ring of light.
  • Make pressed-flower cards from the petals you pick up, and send one to Hội An.
  • A film camera: zoom, focus and take photos for grandma's notebook.
  • The street keeps its hours: shops open and close, drizzle, the tram rings by, cyclos, bicycles, street vendors, fireworks on New Year's Eve.
  • A record player with lo-fi music written for the game. Finish the Spring chapter to unlock the record "Mưa bụi tháng Giêng" (January Drizzle).
  • Free view: pick any season and hour and look at the street through all four seasons, from the autumn sun through the bougainvillea to the mid-autumn full moon over the roofs. You can water and shape the tree here too.
  • Ways of drawing: watercolour, hand-painted with ink lines, or pixel art, with a cinema or old-film colour on top if you like.

Painted in watercolour and ink, in the spirit of old Vietnamese posters, postage stamps and schoolbook pictures.

Play in your browser, or download it for Mac, Windows, Linux and Android.

Languages: English, Vietnamese, French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai and Indonesian. The game starts in your browser's language; switch any time from the title screen or the pause menu.

Controls: mouse or touch. Click people and things to look at them, drag branches to shake them, scroll to zoom. Keys: S notebook, C camera, X shape the tree, H sit on the porch, Z sleep, Esc pause. The pause menu is a page of grandma's notebook: music and street volumes, the record player, the way of drawing and film colour, language, reduce motion, and in the downloaded game a choice of game icon. It also goes straight to Free view and back to the Spring chapter.

Notes: Hàng Tem is a fictional street inspired by Hanoi's Old Quarter. Hanoi's real trams stopped running around 1990–91; in the game they still run, on purpose. The game saves itself (in your browser, or on your device in the downloaded game).

This is the first trial. The Summer, Autumn and Winter chapters come in the full game. Comments are very welcome, especially from anyone who remembers Hanoi in those years.
